OUGD203// End of Module Self Evaluation..
OUGD203 End of Module
Self Evaluation
1// what skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
I feel as though I have developed many skills throughout this module that I can now build on over my final year. One very important skill that I have learnt is collaboration and how important it is to work with other creative’s to come up with a solution to a design problem.
Working with Lisa and a third year Vis Com student during the YCN brief helped me build on my team working skills and ability to communicate and have responsibility when working with others.
I have also developed my design skills and ability to select and analyse pieces of work to help with idea development and final solutions to problems.
2// What approaches to/ methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?
My illustration skills have improved over the course of the module and this can be seen throughout the YCN brief and into Product, Range and Distribution. I am getting better at creating designs using the pen tool, which before I struggled with.
3// What strengths can you identify in your work and how will you capitalise on these?
My strengths within this module have been my illustration, I can now continue to build on these skills into third year as it is something I really enjoy doing. I just need to find more time to do more illustration.
I now also have a better understanding of how branding works and how to create a successful campaign for something. The Heinz Salad Cream YCN campaign was my favourite to work on during this module as I felt I tried the hardest and got the most out of it.
I will continue to investigate into branding throughout third year as this is something that I am wanting to continue in as a professional.
4// What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?
My weakness has probably been my time management as usual. I have not been as efficient as I could be due to laziness and being unorganised. I have also missed a lot of time off uni and then I have had to catch up which means I have not done as much work as I should have and would have liked to.
I think that this has been the case all year so I hope that by third year I will have learnt my lesson.
5// Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
1// Make sure I do my blogging as and when necessary and not last minute which then does not give me enough time to do a substantial and worthwhile amount.
2// Manage my time better; this is a huge downfall for me. I always leave things to the last minute and seriously need to learn from this pretty soon.
3// Be more creative. Even though I have tried new things during this module I still don’t feel like I have pushed myself past any boundaries.
4// Evaluate my work more and gain feedback from my peers. During this module I failed to attend quite a few crits which means I have been unable to gain feedback about my work therefore leading to not being able to develop my work accordingly. I must try to get as much feedback as possible to help improve my work.
5// Try harder. I don’t feel I have worked as hard as I could of in this module. There are many things that I wish I had done but failed to. It has got to the point where I have really realised that by third year I must be willing to put my life into my work.

Design for digital// OUGD202 END OF MODULE SELF EVALUATION..
1// What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
During this module I feel as though I have learnt so much and developed a whole new range of skills. The main skills I have developed through this module are my After Effects skills. Before this module I had never used after effects, it was all new to me. I have learnt many techniques like how to make imagery and text move in many different ways, how to add audio and edit it on a timeline. I have also gained a better understanding of how storyboards and timelines work and their importance in motion graphics. I have used this new skill and understanding in my final sequences which has helped me to communicate my ideas to others and prepare myself for after effects.
I feel that my time management has improved a lot throughout this module. To start with, I wont lie it took me a while to get into it, but now looking back I feel I have tried really hard and managed to manage my time effectively in order to get everything done on time. It is such a good feeling being organised.
2// What approaches to/ methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?
With the Top 10 brief I feel that I changed my design approach quite a bit because I couldnt think of a solid idea that I liked and would enjoy doing. In the end I came up with a design approach that suited me and the way in which I work. I tried to keep my designs simple, not to be lazy but because it is a design approach that I enjoy working with and looking at. My final sequences are light hearted and fun and the movements in them are also simple, but it works so well. When it came to the point of which I didnt have a solid idea, I start to panic, but its not until I look at pieces of design that inspire me that I remember I need to work in a way that suites me and not worry what everyone else is doing.
I think that I have become a lot better at drawing out my ideas before I try and do a final piece, the storyboarding process has helped me to understand the importance of getting all your ideas down first before getting stuck into a final outcome. It has allowed me to step back and look at a range of ideas before I settle on one to pursue with.
3// What strengths can you identify in your work and how will you capitalise on these?
I think that the my biggest strength that has developed through this module is the fact that I can look at my work and be so proud of what I have done. I have thoroughly enjoyed this module, especially the Top 10 brief. Its not very often I want to show off my work, but with my final sequences I couldnt wait to show everyone!
Other strengths include my pre-production skills, I am a lot better at drawing out ideas and evaluating them. I have also got better at research as I think before this was a weakness of mine, but I have tried to improve through this module. Time management is another, being organised makes me less stressful as much as I do love working under pressure. I think these are all important skills and strengths that I should continue to improve on during the course as they are very important things.
4// What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?
As I said before I have become a lot better at time management but one downfall is still blogging. I am getting better at this but I do feel like I still leave some stuff to the last minute. I think that I could have done my silent movie a bit better because some of them I didnt spend that much time on them.
5// Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
1. Keep up to date with all of my blogging: If I can keep on top of this then I wont have any last minute stresses just before deadline.
2. Try and research more: I know I said I am getting better at it but I feel that you can never research too much and I need to do more.
3. Generate more ideas: Every time I get an idea I should be jotting it down and I know I didnt always do this in this module. This will give me more choice when deciding on final outcomes and it also pushes me to think outside of the box.
4. Ask for help more when I need it: I did ask for a lot of help through this module especially Studio Brief Two, but I feel like some parts of my sequences fell short of some amazing techniques because I was too lazy to ask for help. You dont get if you dont ask!
5. Never doubt my work: I have started to become more confident in the work I produce but sometimes I still doubt myself, I need to stop worrying about everyone elses work and what they are doing. The reason I am on this course is to develop my own skills and enjoy myself!

Design for print// End of module evaluation..
OUGD201// Design for print production: End of module evaluation;
1// What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
If I am going to be completely honest with myself, then I would say yes I have learnt a lot throughout this module, but when it has come to the point where I should be applying my new knowledge to my design work I think I could have done a lot better. Theres things like the application of colour through print, my final solution was in black and white and there is nothing wrong with that but maybe I should have eplored colour further, just for my own investigations. When it came to producing a final solution for the Good is brief, I found that I understood a lot about print and I did propose things for the printing of my final designs, I just wish I had been more organised and actually put the effort in to try and do some foil blocking and embossing etc. I now know a lot about print and how important it is, I have learnt things that I would have never of thought to be important before.
2// What approaches to/ methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?
I have found out that there is so much more to printing than what meets the eye, after going to TEAM and looking around a professional printers, I realised how much thought and time goes into even the simplest of things like birthday cards, they we may take for granted in terms of print. I think I most enjoyed learning about all of the print finishes and what effect they have on a design. Another aspect that I found interesting after going to the printers was die cutting, its amazing how each net for packaging or even something that needs to be die cut has to be especially made! I have also learnt a lot about 'real life' print, things like billboards for example, they are everywhere but its not until we had spoken about large scale printing that I actually wondered how they were printed etc. I have a billboard outside my window and I have watched it being changed twice now and I get really excited about it, because I now appreciate it.
3// What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/ will you capitalise on these?
I think the main thing I have found over the last week of the module, is that I am starting to find myself as a designer and I think that is very important at this time. It may not be a strength but it definetly helps when it comes to designing things. I am very happy with my final solution, it took me a while to get into the swing of things but I am happy with what I have produced. I have also started to do a lot more supportive research within this module which has helped me understand certain areas of design and how it will impact my own design work. This is something I need to continue to do as it helps inspire me when I hit a brick wall in my idea generation process.
4// What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?
My biggest weakness through this module would have to be not trying things, like foiling and spot varnishing, I just dont feel like I made enough effort throughout this module and to be honest im disappointed in myself, I know I could have done so much better. I know that I would have enjoyed doing some foil blocking or even making a proper book for my work. I need to address this in the next module because not only will I actually enjoy trying new things, I will learn something new and my design ideas and work will benefit from it.
5// Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from these?
- I would of loved to have been a bit more experimental with things like foiling and spot varnishing, it just would have been interesting to see how it looked on my designs rather than me just proposing it.
- I wouldnt change my idea at the very last minute, I changed my idea 3 days before module submission which wasnt very smart. I didnt feel like my first idea was any good and I wasnt happy with it so I changed it. Next time I need to make sure I choose an idea that not only will I enjoy but will also work well as a piece of communication.
- I will try not to waste time or be lazy. I know for a fact that I have wasted a lot of time during this module messing about and I think this will definetly reflect in my grade. I had a 'i'll do it tomorrow' attitude and it did not help me at all.
- Try more things and generate more ideas at the beginning so that I have time to develop.
- Be more organised and stay late at uni, I know that if I go home I will get distracted so easily. I get more done when I stay at uni.
